Spring 2008 - Professional Development Course Class

Chemical Businesses

May 4th, 2008

Remember the first class?

We displayed the video Shift Happens and that things are
changing fast. History does not necessarily repeat, it “rhymes”.

Some of the information in the table shown on 4-29 (chemical
business trends) will be helpful in our future. Some will be
outdated, like buggy-whips in the age of the automobile.

The table revealed diverse chemical business areas rating a
consensus capacity for future growth and expected
profitability.

A summary of the areas of highest growth and
profitability
includes the following:
- corrosion inhibition
- defoamers
- diagnostic aids
- elastomers
- electronic components
- enzymes
- flame retardants
- flavors and fragrances
- synthetic lubricants
- oilfield chemicals
- specialty polymers (thermoplastics)
- refinery pipeline chemicals
- waste management chemicals

Areas of either low growth or low
profitability
include:
- agricultural chemicals
- dyes and organic pigments
- foundry chemicals
- gasoline additives
- photographic chemicals

Resume file primer

May 2nd, 2008

When my opinion is asked for helping people construct their resume, it is usually expressed as a “resume” is one component of a “resume file”. (More recent ACS documents list this as resume portfolio.)

The resume file is constructed from a MASTER RESUME FILE which lists a comprehensive listing of all studies, works, accomplishments, publications and presentations. It is almost like an academic CV curriculum vita.

The resume file is a focused file used for specific companies or specific purpose, like job fair or ACS career web-site.
It contains:
cover letter
resume
list of references
list of publications, presentations and patents
research summary

In later years of your career, it could include:
industry perspective
management philosophy
patent summary
or other documents of this nature.

It is similar to what the CV has attached to it– namely teaching philosophy, research proposal(s), teaching tools in the classroom.

Now the resume document itself can contain the following sections:
heading
objective or qualifications
highlights
education
experience
honors and awards,
affiliations
keywords

It is your choice which of these to use to create the best document to interest potential employers to invite you for an interview.

Thank you letter - Nick Meanwell visit - Dan

April 16th, 2008

Hi Nick,

Please accept my thanks for so generously
offering, what I am certain, was a great
session on resume writing, cover letters
and job searching for the Chem 300 class.

I was so pleased when you arrived at the classroom
as always a couple of minutes early. The students were
very pleased to have you offer the class and
to meet someone who has a unique perspective
of the hiring and business process.

It is a distinct pleasure to collaborate on
projects like this.

Best regards,
Dan

BTW A colleague with the ACS who is in my
network asked for some suggestions in business
development. Dr. Ken Barr is a director of a small pharma
company in the Bay area. Is there a chance that
you might be willing to speak with him? Please
let me know and I will share your email address
with him to make contact with you.

Thank you letter - Nick Meanwell visit - Chigozie Muoto

April 16th, 2008

Hi all,
this was the thank you note I sent to Nick Meanwell after he gave his talk to the class. Dan suggested that I post it here. Commenets, suggestions and/or corrections are welcome.

-Chigozie

Dear Dr. Nick Meanwell,

My name is Chigozie Muoto, one of the students in Dan Eustace’s class-the man that walked you to the North Garage. I write to thank you for the talk you gave to the class today on resumes, cover letters and locating a job.

Personally, the talk had a great impact on me, especially the section on locating a job opportunity and also the section that talked about things to avoid in a cover letter.

We really appreciate your time and effort.

Thank you again.

Sincerely

Chigozie Muoto
